Ever wanted to try Sandboarding?

Usually, the Sinai desert is rocky, but there are a few sandy patches as well which make it possible to grab a board and slide down the mountains.

It’s much easier than snowboarding and the best thing is: You don’t have to be in cold, snowy and expensive ski areas 😀

Let me tell you exactly where and how I went sandboarding in Dahab, Sinai so you learn everything you need to know and can check that experience off your bucket list!

From Dahab, you’ll drive in the direction of St. Catherine for about 1.5 hours. Now, besides the fact that you’d probably not find your way in the desert, you also shouldn’t go by yourself because your car won’t make it out alive.

It’s absolutely necessary to have a 4×4 car because you’ll have to drive another 1.5 hours through the desert, off the main roads.

The road is very shaky and rocky, so if you’ve had problems with sea sickness before, or driving in general, you might want to take a pill against motion sickness before you leave the main road.

Wish I’d had one!

Your driver might stop to collect some little wood branches to make a fire later.

The Arabs just can’t go without tea for an entire afternoon 😀

On the way, you’ll pass by some amazingly beautiful rock formations and the “Eye of the Desert”.

You can make a stop there and climb up the sandy rock that has a hole in it. When you’re inside, you’ll have this stunning view.

When you finally arrive, soak in the beautiful view for a couple minutes and then YALLA – grab your boards and sliiiiide down!

It’s pretty easy, nothing like skiing or snowboarding and you’ll most likely be able to stand until you reach the bottom and then fall down.

The only thing that is really, really annoying is that once you’re down, you obviously have to walk back up again and that’s REAL work!!!

In fact, it’s so hard (especially under Sinai’s hot sun), that I only did like 4 runs and that enough workout for me.

It’s a big plus if you’re in shape and working out regularly, which I neglected lately and that was a not so subtle reminder to get my workout routine starting again.

Anyways, I wouldn’t recommend going in summer as there’s barely any shade anywhere and you’ll simply burn.

You’ll have to leave at least 1.5 hours before sunset because you can’t drive through the desert in the dark, so try not to leave too late in the morning.

The whole trip will cost about 25€, and I think you’ll have to be a group of four at least. You can connect Jimmy, the guide we went with. Just call or Whatsapp him (he arranges all sorts of tours): +20 100 5488708.

You see, doing any activities in Sinai is extremely cheap. If you did a day trip like this in Dubai or the States, it would probably cost you almost 10x as much.

I can really only recommend doing as much of these bucket list items as you can while you’re in Egypt because you won’t get it cheaper anywhere else in the world, and the Sinai Peninsula is unbelievably beautiful and has so many different activities to offer, in the desert as well as in the Red Sea.
